Mansoureh Sophie Nikookar

Mansoureh Sophie Nikookar is an Iranian fashion researcher and designer with over 15 years of experience as a freelance fashion designer. She holds a Master of Arts in Fashion and Textile Design from the University of Science and Culture in Iran. She is currently pursuing a Doctor of Philosophy in Apparel Studies at the University of Minnesota.

During her master's studies, Sophie delved deeper into the fashion industry and grew more concerned about issues like waste, overconsumption, and the environmental impact of modern production methods. Growing up in a culture that highly values handcrafted textiles and garments, she was immersed in the careful attention to detail, patience, and skill required to create something lasting and meaningful. Over time, she began to see the clear difference between the lasting quality of handcrafted items and the short lifespan of mass-produced garments. This realization heightened her awareness of the environmental and social effects of consumption, especially regarding fast fashion.

This growing awareness paved the way for her focus on sustainability, garment longevity, and the importance of handcrafts. She became dedicated to understanding why handcrafted garments can last longer, highlighting the environmental advantages and the emotional and cultural bonds they create. Her background in handcrafting and her commitment to sustainability motivate her to research solutions for the apparel industry’s environmental issues.

She aims to incorporate cultural heritage and innovative design techniques, such as transformable, modular, zero-waste, and emotional design, to extend garment longevity. Passionate about fostering a more sustainable future, she seeks to reintroduce traditional techniques into modern fashion, helping consumers reconnect with the value of handcrafted pieces and encouraging more responsible buying habits.
